What is a Director Identification Number?

DIN stands for Director Identification Number. It’s an 8-digit unique number that is issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) under the Companies Act, 2013. Every individual who wants to be appointed as a Director in a company in India must obtain a DIN as per the prevailing law of the nation.

Is it mandatory?

Yes, if you want to be appointed as a Director or Designated Partner in a company or LLP. It is unique to every director or Designated partner. It helps to keep track and maintain proper records of the Directors and their directorships in different companies or LLPs. As there is a limitation on the Maximum number of directorships that a person can hold in Indian companies.

Can a person have multiple DINs?

A person can have only one DIN. If a person has more than one DIN, the most recent one must be surrendered, and the applicant will have to pay a penalty for holding multiple DINs.

Is DIN  permanent or temporary?

DIN is a permanent number and it remains valid for life; however, as per latest Notification by MCA, the DIN KYC is required to be done once every 3 years as per applicable laws. The KYC ensures that the DIN remains active on the MCA Portal. In case KYC is not done within the specified time, the DIN becomes deactivated, and compliance cannot be done in such case. DIN can be activated again with a penalty of Rs. 5000 and the filing of DIR-3 Web KYC.

Documents and Information required to obtain a DIN?

Required Documents for Indian Citizens:

  1. Aadhar card
  2. PAN card
  3. Driving License
  4. Legible Address proof such as Bank Statement, Utility Bill, etc [Shall be not older than 2 months]
  5. Passport Size Photo
  6. Specimen Signature

Required Information for Indian Citizens:

  1. Email ID
  2. Mobile Number
  3. Occupation
  4. Educational Qualification
  5. Place to Birth

Required Documents from foreign nationals for DIN:

  1. Passport
  2. Driving License
  3. Residential address proof(Such as Electricity Bill, Mobile bill, Bank Statement etc) [Shall be not older than 2 months]
  4. Passport size photo
  5. Specimen signature 

For foreign nationals the documents as mentioned above shall be Notarized / Apostiled as per the law of the home country.

How to Acquire DIN?

It can be acquired by two ways:

At the time of incorporation, if a person wants to become a Director of the new company being incorporated, then the DIN application can be done with the incorporation process itself with the required documents and details for the company as well as details and documents of the proposed director. One-time password (OTP) is required from the email ID and Mobile number of the Director at the time of filing the forms with the MCA.

If A person wants to become a Director of an existing company, then it can be done by filing the DIR-3 form (Application for DIN Allotment) and paying the applicable Fee. Once DIN is allotted, he can be appointed as director with the appropriate approval from the Board or members as the case may be, and the same is required to be filed with the MCA to take it on Record. One-time password (OTP) is required from the Email id and Mobile number of the Director at the time of filing the forms with the MCA.
